Faceoff Part II: Raising marriage age of girls to 21 – Instead of fixing real hurdles, bill takes away ad – Times of India

The irrationality, if not hypocrisy, of the government comes through clearly in its move to raise the marriageable age of women from 18 to 21 years in the name of women’s empowerment.

Referring to the Child Marriage Prohibition Bill in the preface to the Amendment Bill moved in Parliament by Union minister Smriti Irani, it is stated that “this highly pernicious practice is still not completely eradicated from our society. Hence, there is an urgent need to tackle this societal issue and to bring in reforms.”
